Illumination-driven Mesh Reduction for Accelerating Light Transport Simulations

چکیده
Progressive light transport simulations aspire a physically-based, consistent rendering to obtain visually appealing illumination effects, depth and realism. Thereby, the handling of large scenes is a difficult problem, as in typical scene subdivision approaches the parallel processing requires frequent synchronization due to the bouncing of light throughout the scene. In practice, however, only few object parts noticeably contribute to the radiance observable in the image, whereas large areas play only a minor role. In fact, a mesh simplification of the latter can go unnoticed by the human eye. This particular importance to the visible radiance in the image calls for an output-sensitive mesh reduction that allows to render originally out-of-core scenes on a single machine without swapping of memory. Thus, in this paper, we present a preprocessing step that reduces the scene size under the constraint of radiance preservation with focus on high-frequency effects such as caustics. For this, we perform a small number of preliminary light transport simulation iterations. Thereby, we identify mesh parts that contribute significantly to the visible radiance in the scene, and which we thus preserve during mesh reduction. This is the authors preprint. Adaptive Multilevel Finite Elements for Mesh Optimization and Visualization
Multilevel representations and mesh reduction techniques have been used for accelerating the processing and the rendering of large datasets representing scalar or vector valued functions defined on complex 2 or 3 dimensional meshes. We present a method based on finite elements and hierarchical bases which combines these two approaches in a new and unique way that is conceptually simple and theo...
متن کاملImportance and Discrete Three Point Transport
Global illumination within nondiffuse environments is ideally suited for computation under importance and radiance driven hierarchical refinement: a transport interaction is significant to the view from the eye only if it lies within paths of directional reflection of both radiance originating at a light source, and importance originating at the eye. We have recently developed a hierarchical al...

Abstract Background Despite improvement in safety of plasma transfusion some virus transmission still remains a problem. So as World Health Organization (WHO) recommends, many countries developed Pathogen Reduction Technologies (PRT) to inactivate pathogens, in plasma components. The Methylene Blue (MB) based methods is one of the most universal one. The purpose of this research was, produce...
متن کاملLight-Driven Global Illumination with a Wavelet Representation of Light Transport
This thesis considers the problem of global illumination: the modelling of light as it travels through a scene interacting with the objects contained within the scene. Starting with a description of the problem and a discussion of previous work, we explore a new approach called light-driven global illumination that o ers several advantages over its predecessors: a lower asymptotic complexity, a...
متن کاملMeshless Finite Elements for Hierarchical Global Illumination
We introduce a meshless finite element framework for solving light transport problems. Traditional finite element methods use basis functions parameterized directly on the mesh surface. The creation of suitable parameterizations or clusterings requires pre-processing that is difficult, error-prone, and sensitive to the quality of input geometry. The resulting light transport solutions still ten...
